Many gynecologists promote intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants as highly effective means of contraception that are also very easy to use and have long-lasting effect. These “fix it and forget it” methods of birth control do not require insertion and removal before and after sex, nor can a woman forget to use them. Aside from these advantages, IUDs and implants may also actually be effective for longer than previously thought. While physicians typically recommend that women keep IUDs for up to five years and implants for up to three years, new research has found that these two popular forms of hormonal birth control are safe and reliable at least a year beyond the duration approved by the FDA.

IUDs are an effective birth control method, but they do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms are the best method for protection against most STDs.
