Although a pregnant woman may be given a due date that is calculated as 280 days after the onset of her last menstrual period, things do not always go as expected. In fact, only 70 percent of mothers-to-be deliver within ten days of their estimated due date even when the date is calculated with the help of ultrasound. In order to come up with a more accurate length of pregnancy, researchers undertook to identify the precise point at which a woman ovulates and a fertilized embryo implants in the womb. After analyzing urine samples for three hormones connected with the onset of pregnancy, researchers found that the average time from ovulation to birth is 268 days.
