Because one in three women over the age of fifty suffers a bone fracture due to the bone-thinning disease “osteoporosis,” middle-aged women and older should do everything they can to maintain bone health. This is a particularly important concern after menopause when declining estrogen levels play less of a role in stimulating bone regeneration. As more bone cells die than new bone cells are formed, the porous type (trabecular) of bone found in the forearm, spine, and hip becomes most vulnerable to fracturing. Because prevention is preferable to treatment, women are encouraged to preserve their bone health by eating a diet high in calcium, vitamin D, and protein, as well as engaging in balance, weight-bearing, and muscle-strengthening exercises.
