Those who have the luxury of being able to time a second pregnancy may want to know what recent research on the matter suggests. Because the time between the birth of one child and the conception of another, known as the “interpregnancy interval” (IPI), can significantly affect the mental and physical condition of the mother-to-be, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted a study to find out what best benefits women of childbearing age. They found that short birth intervals (becoming pregnant in less than 18 months) and long intervals (up to 60 months) posed a greater risk of complications. The ideal IPI was found to be two years.
